Serious Machinery

My brother is a logger (Yup! We live in Oregon!) and I went up to visit him at the site the other day near Gaston. He runs this Shovel Logger or Feller/Buncher, a serious piece of machinery.

It’s a Madill, built in Nanaimo, British Columbia. Equipped with a self-leveling cab and a 60″ hot saw (meaning it’s always spinning) it throws big one and a half inch chips of wood when cutting through timber.

He can fell a two foot tree and put the whole tree on the pile in less than five seconds. On this day, he was cutting Douglas Fir trees, ranging from 50 to 100 feet tall.

We got a tortilla press and made corn tortillas today. After eating the first few with melted butter, we made a chicken, cheese, green onion quesadilla. Yum!

This tree and it’s root structure is really cool. Bold and tilted into the slope of the bank, just amazing. Pictures don’t do it justice as the light is tough for photography. It’s my favorite tree that we have found so far.
